Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its outstanding universal value in terms of biodiversity. This biosphere reserve covers 11,187 hectares of dense tropical lowland rainforest.
The forest is home to over 60% of Sri Lanka's endemic trees, many of which are rare. The dense canopy is home to numerous endemic animal species including birds, mammals, butterflies, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. More than half of the bird species found here are endemic to Sri Lanka.
The forest plays a crucial role in regulating the island's climate and water resources. Guided nature walks through the forest reveal its incredible biodiversity, from colorful birds and butterflies to unique plant species that exist nowhere else on Earth.
