Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

Sacred mountain pilgrimage site

Adam's Peak, known locally as Sri Pada, is a 2,243-meter sacred mountain in central Sri Lanka that holds religious significance for multiple faiths. Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims all consider it holy, believing that the footprint-shaped depression at the summit belongs to Buddha, Shiva, Adam, or Saint Thomas respectively.

The pilgrimage season runs from December to May when thousands of pilgrims and tourists climb the mountain during the night to reach the summit at sunrise. The climb typically takes 2-4 hours depending on fitness level and usually starts around 2-3 AM. The path is well-lit and marked, with rest stops and small tea stalls along the way.

The sunrise view from Adam's Peak is considered one of the most spectacular in Sri Lanka, with the peak casting a perfect triangular shadow across the landscape below. On clear days, you can see all the way to the coast. The spiritual significance combined with natural beauty and the sense of achievement makes this a truly transformative experience that attracts visitors from around the world.
