UNESCO World Heritage Site

Central Highlands of Sri Lanka

Montane forest ecosystem

The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka comprise three areas: Peak Wilderness Protected Area, Horton Plains National Park, and Knuckles Conservation Forest. Together, they represent the most significant montane forest ecosystem in Sri Lanka.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is characterized by montane evergreen forests, cloud forests, and grasslands. The area is home to numerous endemic species, including the Sri Lankan leopard, purple-faced langur, and many endemic bird species.

Horton Plains features the famous World's End cliff with its dramatic 870-meter drop, while Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) is a sacred pilgrimage site. The cloud forests of the Knuckles Range create mystical landscapes that change throughout the day.
